What is SSL?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is the industry’s standard method for protecting web communications. Basically, any data sent via an SSL connection is protected by encryption to prevent eavesdropping and tampering with the data being transmitted.

How do certificates/ SSL work?
Simply put, certificates are used to verify identity, while SSL is used for secured and private communication.
An SSL Certificate lets visitors know that they are really doing business with you and that the information they send through your site (such as credit card numbers) is protected from interception or alteration over the web.
How it works:

  1. Your customer contacts your site and accesses a secured URL (web page).
  2. Your server responds and sends the customer your site’s digital certificate.
  3. Your customer’s browser generates a unique session key to encrypt all communications with your site.
  4. Your customer’s browser encrypts the session key itself with your sites public key, to ensure that only your site can read the session key.
  5. A Secure session has now been established, all communications can only be decrypted by the two parties in the session.
  6. It all takes only seconds and requires no action by the user.

How long does it take to get my certificate?
Your SSL certificate will typically be issued within 15 minutes of purchase. However, in some cases it may take up to 24 hours for your certificate to be generated.

Is my certificate tied to a specific IP address, domain name or a machine?
Your certificate is tied to the domain name you register it under. However, you have ownership of your domain name when you register through us (See registering domain name FAQ).

What is a Certification Authority (CA)?
A Certification Authority is a trusted agency that is authorised to issue, renew and revoke digital certificates after verifying the identity and legitimacy of the requesting party.
